You can think of the first five digits as the network code, and the rest as the subscriber number. If you have a Jazz SIM card, for instance, the first three numbers of your number will be 030.

If you want to double-check your SIM number, you can also do so by dialling *99# on your cell phone. The network identification number associated with your SIM card will be shown.

How come SIM codes are so crucial?

There are a number of factors that make SIM codes crucial. One primary function is to keep track of individual mobile phone users across a network. This aids in subscriber management, allowing networks to better serve their customers. As a second point, SIM codes serve a security function. It is common practise for mobile phone owners to notify their network providers when their device is lost or stolen so that they can disable the SIM card. Hence, the possessor of the key will always be the one to gain access.
